City of Canterbury Library Service

Pictorial Canterbury showcases over 11,000 photographs from the City of Canterbury Library Local History Photograph Collection dating from the mid 1800s to the present day. This unique visual record of the City of Canterbury depicts the development of our diverse, vibrant and innovative community where people of different ages, lifestyle and cultural backgrounds have made the community what it is today.

The Collection comprises photographs of people, places, events, organisations, buildings, industry and landscapes that the community has donated or allowed us to copy for the collection over the years. Photographs taken as part of the business activities of Canterbury City Council are also included in the collection.

The Pictorial Canterbury project began in 2003 with a grant from the Library Council of NSW and was developed and is maintained by staff at the City of Canterbury Library. It is a living resource allowing viewers to submit photographs and information such as dates, names, descriptions, historical details or anecdotal information. Testament to this feature is the latest addition to Pictorial Canterbury – the Images with Stories link. Showcasing stories about photographs, this feature recognizes that information and stories contributed by the community are as important as the photographs.

We thank all who have either donated photographs, allowed access to their private photograph collections for copying or contributed stories and information. If it were not for your foresight and generosity, this pictorial record would not exist today.

New acquisitions are continually being added to the collection and donations, loans, stories and information about the photographs are always welcome.
