The Picture Australia Logo
The Picture Australia logo is based on Ned Kelly's armour as depicted by Sir Sidney Nolan in his famous Ned Kelly series of paintings (1945-1947). Some of these paintings form the Nolan Gallery's Foundation Collection, while others are held at the National Gallery of Australia. The logo combines a quintessentially Australian icon with the colours of the Australian landscape. Contact us for free promotional materials, including bookmarks and stickers, based on the logo. Picture Australia is grateful to the Nolan family for permission to use the Ned Kelly image, a marvellous cross-cultural symbol of Australia.
The pervasive nature of Nolan's interpretation of the life of Ned Kelly across the spectrum of Australian life is reinforced by the fact that each of the inaugural Picture Australia image providers, including libraries, archives and museums, holds a 'Ned Kelly' artifact in its collection.
Edward 'Ned' Kelly (1855-1880), one of Australia's most famous bushrangers, made his last stand at Glenrowan in armour he hammered from plough shares. He was hanged at the Old Melbourne Gaol on 11 November 1880. Kelly was a legend in his own lifetime and remains a legend today. Nolan's depiction of this Australian folk hero has become an Australian icon itself and is now a recognisable symbol of Australia and Australian art.
Sidney Nolan was born in Melbourne on 22 April 1917 and studied at the National Gallery of Victoria School. His individual interpretations of historical and legendary figures, such as Ned Kelly, Mrs Fraser, Rimbaud, and Burke and Wills, brought him international acclaim. From 1950 he lived mainly in Britain. He was awarded the CBE in 1963 and was knighted in 1981. He died in London on 28 November 1992.
